PM E-DRIVE Scheme (Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement)

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme is a government initiative launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India, with the approval of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. It was officially notified on 29 September 2024 and came into effect from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2026.

This scheme is designed to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility across multiple vehicle segments, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, buses, and trucks. By offering demand incentives, the government aims to bring down the upfront cost of electric vehicles, making them more competitive with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme also subsumes EMPS-2024 (Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024), which was a short-term measure running from April 2024 to September 2024. All vehicles and expenditures covered under EMPS-2024 now fall under PM E-DRIVE, making its effective period two years.

Two-Wheelers (E-2Ws)

The scheme targets nearly 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers, offering incentives only for models equipped with advanced batteries. Both private and commercial registered e-2Ws are eligible, making EV ownership more affordable for individuals and businesses alike.

Three-Wheelers (E-3Ws)

Around 3.2 lakh electric three-wheelers are set to benefit under this scheme, covering registered e-rickshaws, e-carts, and L5 category vehicles. Only advanced battery-equipped e-3Ws used for commercial purposes qualify, ensuring reliable and sustainable last-mile mobility.

E-Trucks

Incentives apply to N2 (3.5–12 tonnes) and N3 (12–55 tonnes) categories as per CMVR. The demand incentive will be the lowest of the following:

  • ₹5,000 × battery capacity (kWh)

  • 10% of ex-factory price (capped at ₹1.25 crore, excluding trailer)

  • Maximum incentive as per Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
