JSW Motors & Denza: Two Fresh Brands, One Month – What Their Entry Means for India’s EV & PHEV Landscape

The Indian automotive market is about to welcome two new brands within a single month. JSW Motors will debut as a standalone Indian carmaker focused on new energy vehicles, while Denza enters as the luxury electric arm of BYD. Both brands have confirmed their first products and launch timelines, giving buyers a clear picture of what to expect before the year ends.

JSW Motors Combat: A Homegrown Plug-In Hybrid SUV

JSW Motors will reveal its first vehicle, the Combat, on December 4, 2026. The brand operates separately from the JSW MG Motor India joint venture and has signed licensing agreements with Chery Automobile. The Combat is based on the global Jetour T2 and will be assembled at a new greenfield plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.

The SUV carries a boxy, rugged design with high ground clearance, a flat roofline with usable roof rails, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. Inside, it gets a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 540-degree surround-view camera, Level 2 ADAS, and all-wheel drive.

The powertrain combines a 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine with two electric motors and an 18.4 kWh battery pack. Total system output stands at 360 hp and 610 Nm, delivered through a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. The claimed all-electric range is 90 km on the NEDC cycle, with a combined range of around 1,200 km. Expected ex-showroom pricing falls between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 44 lakh.

Beyond the Combat, JSW Motors has outlined a plan for 15 new-energy vehicles over four years. The next model will be the Chery iCar V23 electric SUV, initially imported and later locally assembled at the Maharashtra facility. The Jaecoo J5, offered in both PHEV and EV versions, is also under evaluation for the Indian market.

Denza D9: BYD’s Luxury Electric MPV

Denza will launch the D9 luxury MPV in November or December 2026. The brand follows the same strategy Toyota uses for Lexus and Volkswagen for Audi, positioning Denza as a premium electric sub-brand. Showrooms will operate independently from BYD outlets, backed by dealer groups including Landmark, EVM, and KUN.

The D9 targets the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM 350h. It packs a 103.6 kWh BYD Blade Battery with a WLTP range of up to 520 km and supports DC fast charging at up to 200 kW. The cabin focuses on rear-seat luxury with captain seats that offer power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions, along with built-in display screens and three-zone climate control. Expected ex-showroom pricing ranges from Rs 85 lakh to Rs 95 lakh.

Denza has also confirmed the Z9 GT performance shooting brake for India, though its timeline sits further out. The Z9 GT produces 1,156 hp from a tri-motor setup, claims a 0-100 kmph time of 2.7 seconds, and uses a 122.5 kWh battery with a 600 km WLTP range.

Two Strategies, One Market

JSW Motors and Denza represent contrasting approaches to the Indian market. JSW is building a domestic manufacturing base from the start, focusing on plug-in hybrid technology that addresses range anxiety while localising production. Denza is entering as a fully imported luxury brand, betting on BYD’s battery technology and a premium MPV proposition that currently has few direct electric rivals.

For buyers, the Combat offers a locally assembled PHEV SUV with serious off-road credentials and a sub-50 lakh price tag. The D9 brings a chauffeur-focused electric MPV with limousine-level rear comfort and a 500-plus km real-world range. Both brands expand the new-energy vehicle palette beyond the existing Tata, Mahindra, MG, and BYD lineups.

Success will depend on after-sales networks, charging support, and long-term reliability. JSW’s greenfield plant and Chery partnership need to deliver consistent quality. Denza’s independent dealer network must match the service standards expected in the 85-95 lakh bracket. Pricing, warranty terms, and resale value clarity will shape buyer confidence in the months ahead.
