A new era is dawning at Renault, and it’s looking mischievous, electric, and decidedly modern! The French automaker has unveiled a concept car that successfully blends deep-seated nostalgia with a bold look into the future: the Renault 5 E-TECH Electric Prototype.
This isn’t just a comeback; it’s a total reinvention of a legend. The famous “R5” model, a popular icon of the 70s and 80s, is returning as a 100% electric city car, symbolizing Renault’s “Nouvelle Vague” (New Wave) strategy.
Iconic Charm Meets Modern Tech
The R5 E-TECH Electric Prototype instantly captivates with its familiar lines while sporting audacious contemporary details. The design retains the fun, cheeky character and compact silhouette of the original, with proportions updated for the electric age.
Nods to the Past: It features the iconic squared-off shape, the cheerful “smile” on the front fascia, and subtle references to the original ‘5’ on the wheels and rear logo.
Futuristic Details: The original bonnet air-intake has been cleverly transformed into the EV charging flap, complete with a light-up charge indicator. The flush-fit rear lights include aero flaps, and the headlamps have a distinctly modern look. The front and rear logos illuminate, giving the car a lively feel.
Electric Vision for All

More than a styling exercise, this prototype is central to Renault’s ambition to democratize the electric car across Europe. Built on the new AmpR Small platform, the production model aims to be an accessible, practical, and highly appealing supermini.
Key Specs for the Future Production Model (Based on Announcements):
Range: The top-spec version is expected to offer a WLTP range of up to 255 miles (410 km) from its 52 kWh battery. A smaller 40 kWh battery will also be available, providing around 194 miles (312 km).
Performance: Motor options will range from 95 PS (94 hp) up to 150 PS (148 hp) for a punchy, agile city drive.
Smart Technology: It will feature the latest-generation OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built-in, and will support bidirectional charging (V2L/V2G), allowing the car to power your home or feed energy back into the grid. It even includes an AI avatar assistant called “Reno” to help with queries and controls.
The Renault 5 E-TECH Electric Prototype proves that the future of motoring can be high-tech, environmentally friendly, and utterly charming. It is poised to become the next popular icon of electric mobility.
