August 2026 delivered a landmark month for India's two-wheeler industry with multiple leadership changes across different sales metrics. The scooter segment recorded its highest ever monthly wholesale figure of 8.55 lakh units, surpassing the previous record of 8.24 lakh units set in October 2025. This 24 percent year-on-year growth pushed cumulative scooter sales for January to August 2026 to 60.7 lakh units, a 31 percent increase over the same period last year.
Honda reclaims scooter leadership
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India returned to the top of the scooter wholesale charts in August after losing the position to TVS Motor Company in July 2026 for the first time. Honda dispatched 2.85 lakh scooters to dealerships, registering 6 percent growth over August 2025. However, its market share declined to 33.36 percent from 39.02 percent a year earlier, reflecting faster growth from rivals. TVS Motor Company followed closely with 2.56 lakh scooter dispatches, up 24 percent year-on-year, holding a steady 29.96 percent market share. The Hosur-based manufacturer's electric scooters, the iQube and Orbiter, contributed 57,523 units to this total, a 135 percent surge from last year.
Suzuki and Hero strengthen positions
Suzuki Motorcycle India secured third place with 1.01 lakh scooters, an 11 percent increase driven by the Access 125. The company also sold 668 units of its only electric offering, the eAccess. Hero MotoCorp posted the strongest percentage growth among the top four, with dispatches jumping 49 percent to 72,150 units. The Vida electric scooter range added 25,558 units, up 108 percent, helping Hero raise its market share to 8.43 percent from 6.98 percent. Bajaj Auto, despite a lower base, recorded a massive 279 percent growth to 53,748 units, entirely from its electric Chetak and Yulu models, as production recovered from last year's supply chain issues.
TVS leads overall two-wheeler wholesale
When combining motorcycles, scooters, and exports, TVS Motor Company emerged as India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by total sales volume in August 2026. The company recorded its highest ever monthly sales of 5.91 lakh units, a 21 percent year-on-year increase. Domestic wholesales grew 18 percent to 4.34 lakh units, while exports surged 29 percent to 1.58 lakh units. Electric two-wheelers were a major driver, with 59,453 units sold, up 137 percent from 25,138 units in August 2025. This marked the third time TVS has topped the overall sales chart, having previously done so in June 2026 and December 2025.
Honda and Hero follow in overall rankings
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India posted total sales of 5.79 lakh units, up 8 percent year-on-year. Domestic sales matched this growth at 5.17 lakh units, while exports rose 15 percent to 61,833 units. Hero MotoCorp slipped to third with 5.68 lakh total units, a modest 2.65 percent increase. However, combining ICE and EV retail data, Hero remains the largest player in the domestic market with 5.42 lakh units sold to customers.
Other manufacturers show mixed performance
Bajaj Auto grew total sales 30 percent to 4.44 lakh units, powered by a 53 percent export jump to 2.42 lakh units. Domestic sales rose 10 percent to 2.02 lakh units. Royal Enfield recorded 11 percent growth to 1.26 lakh units, with both domestic and exports rising around 10-11 percent. Domestic retail paints a different picture
According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations data, retail sales to customers told a slightly different story. Honda led domestic retail with 4.47 lakh units, up 20 percent. Hero followed with 4.14 lakh units, up 18.6 percent. TVS Motor Company retailed 3.54 lakh units, the highest growth among legacy brands at 25.3 percent. Bajaj Auto held fourth with 1.57 lakh units, up 15.3 percent. Suzuki and Royal Enfield were the only other brands crossing 1 lakh and 94,000 retail units respectively.
Electric two-wheeler momentum builds
The electric segment continued its rapid expansion across manufacturers. TVS led with 59,453 units, followed by Bajaj at 53,748 units, Hero Vida at 25,558 units, and Ather Energy at 29,694 units. Ola Electric was the only major EV brand to decline, with retail sales falling 28.8 percent to 13,852 units.
Festive season outlook positive
With the festive season approaching, manufacturers are ramping up production and new model launches. Ather launched its mass-market Konarc family scooter on August 29, while TVS introduced the iQube MillionR special edition celebrating one million cumulative electric sales. The record scooter wholesales and strong overall growth suggest the industry is well-positioned for further gains in the coming months.
