Honda Activa e Struggles with Just 140 Units in August 2026 Despite 600 Percent Growth What Went Wrong

The Indian electric scooter market recorded 1,88,714 units in August 2026, a massive 131 percent jump over the same month last year. Bajaj Chetak led with 52,248 units, followed by TVS iQube at 42,882 units and Hero Vida at 25,558 units. Amid this boom, Honda Activa e registered just 140 units. While this represents a 600 percent increase over the 20 units sold in August 2025, the absolute number remains tiny compared to segment leaders.

The Numbers Behind the Headline

Honda's overall two-wheeler dispatches stood at 5,17,329 units in August 2026, up 7.55 percent year on year. The petrol Activa alone contributed 2,55,815 units, making up nearly half of Honda's total volume. In contrast, the electric Activa e managed only 140 units, up from 104 units in July 2026. The sister model QC1, with its fixed battery and home charging, fared better at 1,902 units in August 2026, growing 64 percent month on month.

The DriveSpark data shows that five models in the top 10 had no comparable sales in August 2025, including TVS Orbiter at 14,641 units and Honda QC1 at 1,902 units. Honda Activa e closed the list at 140 units. The combined gain of Chetak, iQube and Vida accounted for nearly 65 percent of total market growth, highlighting how concentrated the demand is among a few established EV players.

Swappable Battery Design Limits Adoption

The Activa e uses a swappable battery system designed for personal commuting. It offers a claimed range of 102 kilometers, top speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and a 7-inch TFT display with Honda RoadSync connectivity. Two variants are offered, priced around 1.17 lakh and 1.52 lakh ex-showroom. However, the battery cannot be charged at home. It must be swapped at dedicated stations.

As of mid-2025, there were only around 80 swapping stations in Bengaluru, with operations just starting in Delhi and Mumbai. This limited infrastructure means buyers in most cities cannot use the scooter practically. The News Analysis India report noted that in the first five months of sales, Honda sold only 698 Activa e units against 4,252 QC1 units, making the QC1 responsible for 86 percent of Honda's electric scooter volume.

Production Pause and Limited Launch Cities

A LinkedIn post by industry observer Arastu Gupta revealed that by mid-2025, production of both Activa e and QC1 was reportedly paused due to weak sales. The launch was restricted to just three cities — Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru — at a price point that stretched the budget of middle-class buyers. The post highlighted that brand legacy gets attention but does not guarantee adoption. Rivals like Ola, Ather, TVS and Bajaj spent years building EV-native ecosystems before Honda entered the segment.

Honda's Next Move: J1H Platform for Late 2026

Honda is now working on a next-generation electric scooter on the J1H platform. The plan includes higher localisation, better range, more features and a target launch window of late 2026. This new model aims to address the shortcomings of the first-generation Activa e. Meanwhile, Honda's global strategy has shifted toward hybrids, with CEO Toshihiro Mibe stating the company will wait until at least the US midterm elections in late 2026 before deciding on affordable EV programs for global markets. The Honda 0 Series Alpha, a smaller electric SUV, is being developed primarily for India but will not be sold in the United States.

The Bigger Picture for Honda in India

Honda's petrol scooter dominance remains intact. The Activa continues to lead the overall scooter market with 2.29 lakh units in May 2026, far ahead of TVS Jupiter at 1.25 lakh units. However, Honda's scooter market share has dropped from 56 percent to 38 percent over the past decade, while TVS has nearly doubled its share from 14 percent to 28 percent. Every fifth scooter sold in India is now electric, and Honda's lack of a successful EV model could see it lose the top spot within four years if the trend continues.

Honda's India reset strategy, acknowledged by global leadership, includes India-specific SUVs, localised hybrid technology, mainstream EVs with India-first priorities, faster product cycles and greater autonomy for Indian operations. The company plans a six-model pipeline including a sub-4-meter SUV, a midsize SUV, next-generation City, localised strong hybrids and a more aggressive EV strategy.

The Activa e's struggle shows that even an iconic brand cannot rely on name recognition alone in the electric transition. Infrastructure readiness, pricing, charging convenience and ecosystem maturity matter more than nostalgia. Honda's next electric scooter on the J1H platform will be the real test of whether the company can translate its two-wheeler leadership into the EV era.
