The more than 72% increase in electricity consumption at public EV charging stations during FY2025-26 is an important indicator for India’s electric mobility transition.
It shows that public charging is seeing much greater use as EV adoption expands.
At the same time, India’s public charging network has grown significantly, with the government reporting 52,718 public charging stations through the BHEL portal as of July 2026, including more than 16,500 stations equipped with fast chargers for cars.
The next challenge is no longer simply installing chargers.
India needs to make those chargers reliable, accessible, fast and well distributed.
If infrastructure expansion keeps pace with EV sales, public charging could become one of the key factors that helps electric vehicles move from an emerging technology to a mainstream transportation choice.
For EV buyers, the message is simple:
India’s EV ecosystem is growing — and the charging network is starting to grow with it.
India’s EV Charging Growth: Key Numbers
| Indicator | Latest figure |
|---|---|
| Increase in public charging electricity consumption | More than 72% in FY2025-26 |
| Public charging stations reported through BHEL portal | 52,718 |
| Public stations with fast chargers for cars | 16,561 |
| Public EV stations reported in Aug 2025 | 29,277 |
| PM E-DRIVE allocation for public charging | ₹2,000 crore |
| PM E-DRIVE chargers approved as of July 1, 2026 | 6,562 |
| PM E-DRIVE approval amount as of July 1, 2026 | ₹689 crore |
| EV penetration, FY2019-20 | 0.7% |
| EV penetration, FY2025-26 | 8.2% |
The figures come from different reporting dates and sources, so they should not all be interpreted as directly comparable year-on-year measurements.
Government Push for More Charging Infrastructure
The Indian government is also putting significant money behind charging infrastructure.
Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, ₹2,000 crore has been allocated for deployment of public EV charging infrastructure across India.
As of July 1, 2026, the government said ₹689 crore had been approved for deployment of 6,562 chargers to three oil marketing companies and nine states.
The PM E-DRIVE programme is intended to expand charging infrastructure across the country, including Tier-II and Tier-III cities and other regions.
This is important because India’s EV growth cannot remain concentrated only in major cities.
