Delhi Accelerates Its Electric Mobility Mission
In a major step toward cleaner transportation, the Delhi government is planning aggressive new policies to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The upcoming proposal includes a complete ban on petrol-powered two-wheelers by 2028 and full tax exemption on electric vehicles priced up to ₹30 lakh.
This move is expected to significantly reshape the capital’s mobility ecosystem and push India closer to its EV transition goals.
Petrol Two-Wheelers May Be Phased Out by 2028
As part of its long-term clean mobility roadmap, Delhi is considering a complete ban on new petrol two-wheelers by 2028. This means:
- No new petrol scooters or bikes will be registered after the deadline
- Consumers will be encouraged to switch to electric alternatives
- Existing petrol vehicles may continue for a limited transition period
Two-wheelers form a major share of Delhi’s traffic and pollution. By targeting this segment, the government aims to reduce emissions at scale.
100% Tax Exemption on EVs up to ₹30 Lakh
To make EVs more attractive, Delhi is also planning a full tax waiver on electric vehicles priced up to ₹30 lakh.
What this means for buyers:
- Significant reduction in upfront cost
- Premium EVs become more affordable
- Wider adoption across middle and upper segments
Currently, EV incentives exist, but this move could take affordability to the next level—especially for electric cars and high-end electric scooters.
Delhi has consistently ranked among the most polluted cities in the world. With rising vehicle numbers, the need for clean mobility solutions is urgent.
These proposed measures aim to:
- Cut vehicular emissions drastically
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
- Promote sustainable urban transport
- Strengthen EV infrastructure and ecosystem
This is not just a policy—it’s a tipping point moment for India’s EV revolution. By targeting two-wheelers (the largest vehicle segment) and making EVs financially attractive, Delhi could set a model for other states to follow.
If successfully implemented, this could trigger:
Faster EV adoption nationwide
Stronger competition among EV brands
Rapid infrastructure growth
