In a landmark decision to promote green mobility, the Maharashtra government has announced full toll exemption for electric vehicles (EVs) across major routes in the state. The exemption came into effect on August 22, 2025, and covers the Atal Setu (Mumbai–Navi Mumbai), Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai–Nagpur).
The initiative was framed under the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1958 and approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, confirmed the decision during a press briefing.
All categories of EVs will enjoy the toll waiver, including:
Private four-wheelers
Buses operated by State Transport Undertakings (STUs) and private entities
Specifically, EVs under M2, M3, and M6 categories are eligible.
Government’s Green Push
“By waiving tolls for electric vehicles, we are not only supporting EV owners but also taking a big step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner environment,” said Minister Sarnaik.
The move aligns with Maharashtra’s vision of sustainable infrastructure and green mobility, making EVs a more attractive option for private users and fleet operators.
Why This Matters
Cost Savings: EV owners will save significantly on operational expenses.
Environmental Benefits: Encourages a faster shift from fuel-based vehicles to clean energy alternatives.
Boost to EV Ecosystem: Analysts believe the policy will strengthen Maharashtra’s growing EV adoption and could inspire other states to follow suit.
With this toll exemption, Maharashtra has positioned itself as a leader in clean transport policies. The initiative not only eases financial pressure on EV owners but also pushes the state closer to its climate and environmental targets.
